Mentor Moms' Monday and a Half (It's a little late)

Life Happens

Yesterday was a very busy day for me and life was happening.  One of the things I was doing was shopping for birthday bags for homeless Anoka County teens.  It not something I would have normally thought of in my day-to-day life when life is happening with my family, but it will be something I think about now.
The birthday bags are the end of the year project for the Bible study I have been attending.  In the MOPS group, appropriately so, the focus in on young children and mothers. Mothers' hearts, can  you imagine what it would be like to be a homeless teen?  I just don't equate Anoka County with homeless teens. I do believe teens are a group in the grand scheme of charitble giving that is often overlooked.
Anyway,  if anyone would like to check out the organizaion it is called Hope4Youth. www.hope4youthmn.org.  Pray for those that are truly less fortunate.  Pray for families.  Our society so needs Jesus!

Tasty Tuesday-What's for Dinner

About twice a year I like to shop my pantry and freezer. This means I try to use up the contents of my pantry, freezer, and fridge forgoing grocery shopping (filling in necessities like milk, of course!)  until it is cleared out. This keeps us from wasting food and allows me to clean and reorganize. It's amazing how much you can accumulate and forget about. Because I am not a list maker I end up repeatedly buying the same things over and over.......Anyway, when the inventory starts to get low it becomes a little harder to plan a meal. That is until I ran across this little gem of a website. You click the ingredients you have on hand and it comes up with recipes for you. Neat, huh? If you want to check it out click here.

Mentor Mom Monday - Remembering

Remembering - sometimes we try to remember everything.....the to do list, the encourage list, the planning list.....there really are so many things we try to remember. It can be overwhelming just to remember what we have to prioritize. There is one simple thing to remember that brings life into everything, today, tomorrow and into eternity and that's the Name of Jesus.

The Name of Jesus has been used as a blessing and as a curse word.  When we speak the Name of Jesus do we remember the power of His Name and do we consider the context we or someone else are using it in?  Do we honor God by how we speak and remember the Name of Jesus?

In Luke, Chapter 23 verses 32-43 we learn about two criminals who were hung to the right and left of Jesus.  They were being punished justly according to their wrong deeds.

One criminal, Scripture says, hurled insults at Jesus.  "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

He didn't get it....Jesus WAS saving him by sacrificing Himself.  The other criminal rebuked the first saying "Don't you fear God, since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."

Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

The incredible beauty of remembering happens immediately.  v 43 Jesus answered him,"I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

Remembering.....when you have regrets about your misdeeds, about things you have failed to remember, fears about the future, or simply an unending list of things to do....take the first moments of those circumstances to remember to ask Jesus to remember YOU!

Do it as the first thing on your to do list every day and then remember with complete confidence that Jesus can be trusted to remember you.

Like the two criminals on the cross, we are all sinners....which one will you be like today?

May God bless you and keep you in His perfect peace today and always,
May Jesus remember you with love,

Cheryl M

Women in the Word-Talking to our Children about Boston

It seems more and more we are having to be so deliberate to shield our children from never ending bad news. Shooting, war and now a bombing.

I still remember the morning more than a dozen years ago when I turned on the TV just in time to watch live as a plane took out the second tower. It was the first time I knew that I couldn't hide the bad news from my then five year old, Alison. Minutes later my nightgown wearing barefoot daughter made her way sleepily to the living room. As she snuggled down deep next to me she knew that this morning was different. You don't necessarily think when you are cradling your baby in your arms that one day you would have to explain evil to them. You are not prepared and I don't think you can be. It is just one of those jump in head first and pray that what comes out is sufficient enough to be truthful and satisfying without ruining the innocence and wide eyed curiosity that only childhood can yield. How do you remind them the that here and now in my arms or at school or at grandma's they are safe? I know we need to filter but most of the time it is unavoidable.

Several months ago. Another school shooting. This time it was Brouke's turn to see what evil looks like. And now, an all American wholesome activity marred by destruction and devastation is plastered everywhere. The horror and destruction is all over the TV and on the lips of every adult.

It is a fine line and letting your kids steer your conversation will generally give you parameters to work with. Kids usually ask great questions and beyond what they ask is most of the time unnecessary. They will clue you in to what is in their heart and how much they can handle. With the little ones be selective, you don't want to compromise their sense of safety. Older kids will be able to process more but all children will need extra love and reassurance. Speak scripture to them. Remind them not be worry or be anxious (Matthew 6:27) that God will deliver us from our fears (Psalm 34:4). Tell them that God will give them peace and that He is in control (Phillipians4:6-7). Remind them for every bad person their are thousands of good people. Let them get involved in making the world a better place by giving them opportunities to serve others and their community. It helps channel all their fears and gives them a sense of control over their environment. Mostly, trust your instincts. God gave you the children you have for a reason.

Lessons about God from a Jonah Bible Study

There was a question that I wrestled with for about three years.  God is sovereign, we know that, but does he change his mind?   In Jonah 3:10 it says, "When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which he declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it."
The study by Priscilla Shirer, "Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted" brought in examples of a sinful people or person praying and changing the course of actioned planned.  In Jonah 3:9, the King prompted his people to turn from their wickedness and fast and he said, "Who Knows?, God may turn and relent and withdraw his burning anger so that we will not perish"
In 2 Samuel 12:22, King David answered his servants by saying, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, 'Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live."
And again in Joel 2:13-14," Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God., for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. "Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing--grain offering and drink offerings for the Lord your God."
Shirer writes, "None of these people pretended to be able to control or manipulate God and yet they rested in the knowledge of God's merciful tendencies and hoped in Him. They believed God was powerful enough and sovereign enough to steer their circumstances however He wished."
The bottom line is that God truly cares about the hearts of His people and he wants their obedience. He wants to give good things.  This really is a message of Hope.
I just thought I would share a little of the my Bible study message. I hope it has blessed you like it blessed me.

Women in the Word-Bible Study *with giveaway* Giveaway closed

One of the very first daily Bible study I ever did was David by Beth Moore. I learned so much more than I ever expected. I loved how it was organized and ready to dig into. Each week is divided into 5 days and I found that it helped keep me organized and accountable. I have since gone on to do many more by Beth Moore, Priscilla Shrirer, and Women of Faith.

With summer coming I thought it was a perfect opportunity to dig into a 9 week Bible study (perhaps at the beach or pool). I will be doing Beth Moore's A Woman's Heart-God's Dwelling Place and I thought maybe one of you might want to do it to.

All you have to do to win is comment below what you are most looking forward to this summer. The winner will be picked using random.org on Thursday April 18.

You can learn more about the book by clicking here

Mentor Mom Monday "All This And Heaven Too!"

My mom has a great saying that she's been using for years, "All this and heaven too!"

It usually follows something good....a wonderful meal, a favor done, a sunrise, a family gathering. All this and heaven too....we get not only all the good things here but also, as believers in Jesus Christ, the assurance of heaven to look forward to all the time....a sure thing of wonder and beauty.

I thought about her saying while I enjoyed the MOPS service, potato bake, silent auction, the talent of speakers, workers, singing, playing music, joining in conversation together, soooooo many wonderful things happening all at once..... All this and heaven too!   What a day.

It easy to count our blessings when we have a great day....but we have sooooo many to count every day that I wonder if we realize the impact of "All this and heaven too" when we have doubts, fears, troubles, sickness...these things can be overwhelming.

Tapestry Walls in the Castle at Chillon Switzerland
Where Mom said, "All this and heaven too!"
I was thinking about the doubts and fears of change as some of our dear friends graduate from our MOPS program and move out into the world to impact lives in new ways. Leaving doesn't always feel like a blessing....All this and now it's over... but what we have built together and experienced together is woven into our memories and hearts like a beautiful tapestry.

Sometimes we can only see the knots, the places threads were clipped and then retied in a new place, the underside is filled with blurred shapes and loose ends.....but when we get the luxury of looking on the flip side....well what a picture!  All this and heaven too.....

As you go through the changes we all experience day to day, take a minute to realize that not one is missed in the tapestry of life.  That God is infinitely capable of clipping, sorting, changing color and preparing the loom perfectly for the next moment, season or day.

You women of MOPS are beautiful yarn in the hands of a loving God and when we see the flip side of the next year of MOPS and the next phase of the lives of our graduates....well  I just know I will be saying.....All this and heaven Too!  I'm blessed by your lives.....Many Thanks...I Love Ya,
Cheryl

Family Friday-A Lesson in Life Giving Words

A great read about how powerful our words are. A great conversation to have with your kiddos (I had this talk yesterday with my 2 youngest). Have the kids watch the video with you- a great visual about how hard it is to take back hurting words. http://www.thebettermom.com/2013/04/i-stumble-a-lot/

Have a wonderful weekend! Hopefully, today was the last we will see of snow-at least for a while!

Women in the Word-Memorizing Scripture

I didn't grow up in a Christian family so memorizing Bible verses as an adult is H-A-R-D! My kiddos, no problem. Broukie, my 8 year old, memorizes and retains sometimes 4-5 verses a week! Ahhhh...To have a young sweet absorbent brain. Joelle, sent me a link that gives tips and tricks to help us (mommy brain and all) to memorize scripture. If your interested click here. Do you have any tips or tricks not listed that help you? I would love to hear them! Thanks, Joelle, for passing this on!

Tasty Tuesday-Sweet and Sour Chicken

I love when my sweet girls want to prepare dinner. I love not just the practical skills they are learning in the kitchen but also that they are building a sweet friendship. If you are looking for a yummy and easy dish...keep on reading,
Get a baggie with some corn starch and add your chichen.

Close bag and put on your bag shakin' face-as demonstarted by my
lovely assistant.
Whisk up a few eggs.

After you dredge your chicken in cornstarch add it to your egg
mixture-be sure to coat both sides.
Add your chicken to the hot oil. Brown both sides. Takes
about 2-3 minutes each side. We brownd the chicken in three
batches to ensure the chicken would brown and not steam. Add
it to your baking dish. (Alison is getting to be a pro on the stove!)

In between browning mix up your sauce. I would double the
sauce and keep the extra warm on top of the stove. Some like it
                                                 saucier than others.
Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken.
Add some bell pepper to the mix and it is ready for the oven!
Voila! Served over some yummy fluffy white rice. And the verdict
                                                  is.................................
Thumbs up from my girlies and.............................................

My sweet men happily took seconds! We hope you enjoy as much
as we did!

MENTOR MOMS' MONDAY

     Thought Life

We serve a Risen Savior....isn't that just the best news ever!  I don't know about you, but Easter came and went like a bolt of lightening.  Too fast.  I felt like there wasn't enough time to contemplate the great gift of Jesus dying on the cross for my sin.  Why is that?  But then I thought about it.  I should be so thankful everyday for God's precious gift of his son, and not just on Easter.  With the hustle and bustle of schedules and commitments I wondered where my thought life had been.?  It should first be on Jesus! I know that!
As Christians we have the good news to think about, to share, and to be so thankful for each day.  Christ has risen!  WOW!  My challenge to myself and to you, if you should accept it is to meditate daily on God's precious gift of his son, then share that Good NEWS, and always be thankful for the gift of salvation by way of the cross!  My thought life should always be focused on the following, and my mouth ready to spread the news that....

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."  John 3:16-17.

Thank you Jesus!

Have a blessed day!
