Women in the Word-The Original Teen Mom

17 years ago today I was 17.  It was my senior year of high school or at least it should of been. I was that girl. You all knew her. That girl in high school who suddenly disappeared from the halls-the girl who got pregnant in high school. Let me tell you, it wasn't trendy 17 years ago to be that girl. There were no television shows or magazine covers to glamorize it.

At 23 weeks pregnant I went into preterm labor. For a week they were able to pump enough medication into me to delay delivery. Halloween 1995 at 24 weeks pregnant I welcomed my 1 lb 12 oz baby girl into the world. The doctor laid her briefly on my chest before being whisked away by a team of doctors and nurses. Hours later I was wheeled down to get a glimpse at my daughter. She was covered in tubes and wires and her eyes were still fused shut. She was beautiful despite it all.

Her outcome was bleak. I was told to prepare for wheel chairs, feeding tubes, extreme mental impairments and the list went on. Some said it was what I deserved for being a teen mom, others said that I got myself into this so I would have to deal with this on my own, and I was ridiculed by the rest. Let me tell you, it was a dark, terrifying, lonely time. No matter, everyday I was there mothering her as much as I could under the extreme circumstances. Two and half months later and one month and one day before her due date, Alison beat the odds and came home months ahead of schedule weighing a hefty 4lbs 7 oz. Not only did she come home but she stayed home. The first few months were rough. Sleeping for only 45 minutes at a time, countless doctor appointments, and financial hardship.

Alison beat the odds in ways that doctors can't explain. It wasn't an easy ride but we made it.

I could go on, the story is good-well, at least I think so:) I share the good with the bad. The triumphs with the tragedies. No, it wasn't ideal to be a pregnant teenager. I see my daughter now at the age I was when she was born and she is such a baby still. I think back to the girl I used to be and I see a scared young girl in need of a little compassion, guidance, and forgiveness.

I think sometimes we dismiss people who are hurting when we feel like they brought it on themselves. We pick and chose who is deserving of mercy and compassion and when we do we are playing god. Loving someone who is hurting because of their poor choice doesn't mean you agree with or support their transgression. The hurt and tears are their repentance and repentance means they understand the magnitude of their offense. Indifference and humiliation further breaks the person. We serve a God of healing and mercy and sometimes that healing and mercy comes from you.

Today I rejoice and thank God for the miracle who sleeps down the hall. I thank God for giving that 17 year old girl such love and compassion for that tiny baby, and I thank God for His compassion and mercy on me, and for being the God of second chances.

Keepsake Boxes

I had a side conversation after the DGL dicussion time regarding some of the things I did to keep the special items of my children safe and ready to pass down.   I started keepsake boxes.  A pink one for my daughter and a blue one for my son.  In them I put special toys, clothing, dolls, trucks, (you get the idea) that were and still are special to my kids.  When the lid is opened, as was the case today for this blog, a flood of memories came gushing out.  It's just a fun little idea that I wanted to pass on to the group.

Why Did God Make Mothers-Friday Funny

Happy Friday ladies. Here is a little funny to start your weekend! If you are looking for something to do tomorrow Riverdale MOPS is having their craft and bake sale go check them out!!

Answers given by elementary school age children to the following questions:

Why did God make mothers?
1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers?
1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.
3. God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger
parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of?
1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in
the world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use
string, I think.

Why did God give you your mother and not some other Mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me.

What kind of little girl was your Mom?
1. My Mom has always been my Mom and none of that other stuff.
2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty
bossy.
3 They say she used to be nice.

What did Mom need to know about dad before she married him?
1. His last name.
2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk
on beer?
3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to
chores?

Why did your Mom marry your dad?
1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my Mom eats a lot
2. She got too old to do anything else with him.
3. My grandma says that Mom didn't have her thinking cap on.

Who's the boss at your house?
1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goof
ball.
2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the
bed.
3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What's the difference between moms and dads?
1. Moms work at work & work at home, & dads just go to work at work.
2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.
3. Dads are taller & stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause
that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend's.
Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.

What does your Mom do in her spare time?
1. Mothers don't do spare time.
2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.

What would it take to make your Mom perfect?
1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of
plastic surgery.
2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.

If you could change one thing about your Mom, what would it be?
1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid
of that.
2. I'd make my Mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who
did
it and not me.
3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on her back.

Thrifty Thursday-Thankful Tree

Here is a fun and inexpensive craft that would be fun for the whole family! With November and Thanksgiving fast approaching what better time to reflect on gratitude. The holiday season has our kiddos dreaming of the latest and greatest toy and electronic gadget. This is a great time to pause and reflect on how blessed we really are.  I would love to hear about the cute and sweet things your kiddos are greatful for, they never cease to amaze us!
1 Thessalonians 5:18
In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Giving Up on Perfection

http://www.mops.org/page.php?pageid=3275&PHPSESSID=579c2a927ffbb8322b1fe9ef22d0e518

Thank you, Joelle for sending this article.  It is easy to feel the inadequacies of others seemingly perfect lives. I know that there are moments in my day that I hope nobody stops by for an impromptu visit. I will admit that I have heard a knock at the door at a time my house wasn't looking so hot. I scooped my children to the floor and gave them the "look" that would make an angry bear stand still. It's OK to not live in perfection and it is OK to invite others to be a part of your imperfections. To most, it would probably be a sigh of relief.  I will say that I don't think it is OK to live in filth and utter chaos but crumbs on the floor from lunch and toys strewn about the living room shows that their is life in that home, that a family lives there, and they are living life and enjoying it!

Go ahead and share about the meltdown your child had in the busy grocery store, or that you fell asleep and missed the bus dropping off your 4 year old child and you didn't hear them trying to call you for over an hour (sorry Alison), or fill in your own blank. You just might make a difference, a connection, and a friend.

Joelle, was right in saying that she thought "It fits in well with our theme of loving and being real."  I think it is our vulnerability and imperfections that allows others to see God's work in our lives. Isn't that the point?  To see God where you least expect Him-in the imperfections and ugliness of life. That no matter what, "He's not finished with me yet!" Creamy Dreamy Chicken Burritos
This is an easy recipe that my family loves! Make a double batch because this is also freezer friendly!
I hope you enjoy!

Let's get started! Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. You are going to need 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts*,
1 can cream of chicken soup, 1- 4 oz can diced green chilies (these are not spicy), 3/4 C
sour cream, 1 C salsa, shredded cheese (your favorite), and flour tortillas.

Cook and dice or shred your chicken. I baked my chicken at 350 Degrees for
45 minutes and let cool for 20 minutes for easier handling.

Add chicken and green chilies to a pan and heat over medium heat.

Mix together Sour cream, salsa, and cream of chicken soup.
Mix well and reserve one cup of sauce for later.

Add the rest of sauce and 1 C of shredded cheese to the
Chicken mixture, Cook over medium heat and stir
until mixture is bubbly and cheese is melted.
Add about 1/4 C of the chicken mixture to the center
of your tortilla and roll. Place seam side down in baking
                                                 dish.
Add the reserved sauce mixture over each tortilla and
sprinkle with cheese. I used about another Cup of
cheese on top but use as little or as much as you'd
like. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until hot and bubbly.

Remove from oven and let set for 5-10 minutes. Cut and
                                                  Enjoy!

Dreamy Creamy Chicken Burritos
-*3 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cooked
-1- 4oz can of diced green chilies
-1 Can cream of chicken soup
-3/4 C sour cream
-1 C salsa
-shredded cheese
-flour tortillas

-Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  -Dice or shred your cooked chicken.  -Add your chicken and green chilies to a pan and heat over medium heat.  -Meanwhile, add the sour cream, salsa, and cream of chicken soup to a separate bowl and mix well; reserving 1 Cup of the mixture.  -Add the sauce mixture to the chicken and add 1 C of shredded cheese. Mix well until hot and bubbly. -Add about 1/4 C mixture to the center of the tortillas and roll placing seam side down in a baking dish. -Spread remaining sauce mixture over the rolled tortillas and sprinkle with cheese. -Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes until hot and bubbly. -Let set 5-10 minutes before cutting. -Enjoy!
*You can use whatever chicken pieces you prefer. A mixture of breasts and thighs is really good too!

If you are making this earlier in the day, remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Allowing it to come to room temperature ensures even baking and prevents it from over browning.  If using frozen, let thaw in the refrigerator overnight and place it on the counter for 30 minutes before baking.

Church Bulletin Bloopers

A few funnies to help get your weeend started! Some of these had me in tears! Have a wonderful and safe weekend!

  • Bertha Belch, a missionary from Africa, will be speaking tonight at Calvary Memorial Church. Come and hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa.
  • Our youth basketball team is back in action Wednesday in the recreation hall. Come and watch us kill Christ the King.
  • Miss Cheryl Hanson sang "I Will Not Pass This Way Again," giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.
  • Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don't forget your husbands.
  • Next Sunday is the family hayride and bonfire. Bring your own hot dogs and guns.
  • The peacemaking meeting scheduled for today has been canceled due to a conflict.
  • The sermon this morning is "Jesus Walks on the Water." The sermon tonight is “Searching for Jesus."
  • Barbara remains in the hospital and needs blood donors for more transfusions. She is also having trouble sleeping and requests tapes of Pastor Jack's sermons.
  • During the absence of our pastor, we enjoyed the rare privilege of hearing a good sermon when R. J. Stadanko supplied our pulpit.
  • Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.
  • Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say "hell" to someone who doesn't care much about you.
  • Don't let worry kill you off. Let the Church help.
  • Gil Henson and Jolene Jackson were married on October 24. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.
  • At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be "What is Hell?" Come early and listen to our choir practice.
  • Eight
new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new
members and to the deterioration of some older ones.
  • Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles, and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.
  • The Lutheran Men's group will meet at 6 PM. Steak, mashed potatoes, beans, bread, and dessert will be served for a nominal feel.

Women in the Word-Marriage in Pieces

http://www.ourfamilyforhisglory.com/2012/10/marriage-in-pieces/   If you've been married for any length of time you can probably relate.  I don't think it is the heat of the moment that kills a marriage but the brick wall that is built after.  Holding on to bitterness, being self righteous, and keeping score, little by little builds a wall that is almost impossible to penetrate.

This blogger shows us that a bad moment can open the door for a real deep intimate connection with your spouse.  She could of used his peace offering as a invitation to once again let him have it and they could of spent a sleepless night hugging the edges of the bed. Their day would of started with cheap jabs, animosity and tension that would spill over onto their children.  Instead, they will smile about how exhausted they are by their late night. They will be content, because not only did they weather the storm but they grew closer. Allow God into your marriage and let God work through you not only when your marriage is for better but especially when it is for worse. Sometimes the only life line is the one you throw, it can be heavy but oh so worth it! Don't let the enemy win.

Tasty Tuesday-Cheesy Chicken Tater Tot Casserole

This yummy recipe was sent to us by our own fabulous, Joni Berg.  Joni shares that this recipes isn't just just delicious but also budget friendly!  Bonus points for being crock pot friendly! Thank you, Joni, for sharing! This is on my menu for the week!

    Cheesy Chicken Tater Tot Casserole {Slow Cooker}

    Ingredients:

1 (32 oz.) bag frozen tater tots
    1 (3 oz.)bag bacon pieces
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, diced
    2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
    3/4 cup milk
    salt & pepper, to taste

    Directions:
Spray slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray.

Layer half of the frozen tater tots on the bottom of the slow cooker.
Sprinkle with 1/3 of the bacon pieces.
Now top with 1/3 of the shredded cheese.

Add diced chicken on top. Season with salt & pepper.

Now add 1/3 of the bacon pieces and another 1/3 of shredded cheese.
Put the rest of the frozen tater tots on top.
Finish with the remaining 1/3 cheddar cheese and remaining 1/3 of bacon pieces.

Pour 3/4 cup milk all over the top.

Cover and cook on low about 4-6 hours.

Note: Some slow cookers run at different temperatures. If you are using an older slow cooker (older than about 6 years old), your cooking time may take longer. Newer models run a bit hotter so keep an eye on this around the 4 hour mark. You want to make sure the chicken is cooked thoroughly (to 165F degrees).

Cook's Note: This recipe is designed to be made in a slow cooker. If your only choice is to make it in the oven then you will need to thaw partially thaw the tater tots first. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick spray. Then layer ingredients into baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for about an hour to an hour and a half.

Also, use any kind of bacon you want with this. If you have some fried bacon or microwave bacon - that all works just fine too!

    Perserverance

I am participating in a Bible study by Beth Moore on the book of James.  I am getting many things out of it, and have been challenged with the idea of perserving. Of the various definitions for perserverance Moore offers, there is one that really paints a mental picture for me. It says, "perserverance means, 'nerving oneself' like a person deteremined to stay on his feet, holding tight to Jesus, while storm winds try to toss him like a yellow rubber duck on a swelling sea."  No one really wants to be that rubber duck on the open seas!  In the good old Merriam Webster Dictionary perserverance is defined as "to persist, maintain effort, steadfastly, especially in the face of difficulties."

My confession, on this bright and beautiful Monday, is that I am having a hard time organizing things.  I like to start the week getting organized so the rest of the week flows smoothly.  It used to be very easy for me to sort, clean, and multi-task many things. Not anymore! I was extremely organized when I used to work outside of the home. If my name was Olivia then the adjective associated with my name would have been "organized," (remember the Mentor Moms' icebreaker from the first meeting?).

When I first became a mother I worked really hard at trying to stay organized. I don't know, but when I watch my 19-year-old daughter, I think she has the organization gene now. Seriously, I think I literally passed it on to her. It was taken from me at her birth!  Needless to say, I learned to give myself plenty of grace in the super organized arena when my kids were young and still do now. After my daughter was born and then later my son, another young mother told me her strategy was to pick up one room at a time.  If there was only one room that was put back into shape that day, then that was great. She was trying. I really liked her.  It was advise that freed me from guilt.

Why am I sharing this today?  I want to tell you young moms to hang in there. Enjoy your kids! They grow up fast.  Continue to perserve second by second, minute by minute, moment by moment and hold tight to Jesus.  I am.

    Blessings,
    Holly Broden
