Family traditions Friday-Getting ready for Christmas

For the next several weeks leading up to Christmas and New Year I want to take the time to share the special traditions and celebrations you do as a family! Please email me at frabv2357@q.com or message me on Facebook if you would like to share! I am also looking for special Holiday recipes you enjoy this time of year!

I will get things started. For the past 10 Christmas's we put the tree up near my birthday (November 14). We started this tradition because years ago we were a young family with little money and little time. My hubby was working full time and going to school and I was working part time and busy with 2 little girls. We didn't have money to go out and have a big dinner or gifts.  My hubby would take the evening off from studying, he would order my favorite pizza (Davanni's) for dinner and we would decorate the tree. We would finish off the celebration with ice cream cake, hot chocolate, Christmas movie, and a sleepover under the tree. We have come to treasure this tradition for so many reasons. We can look back now on some of those harder years and rejoice that we have come so far but it also reminds us that in every circumstance you can find joy and contentment.

Sleeping under the Christmas tree is something I started doing 17 Christmas's ago when my Alison was just a little over one year old. My kiddos look forward to this almost more than anything else! Oh, the sweet memories we have made under our artificial tree with twinkly colorful lights and a hodgepodge of ornaments!

What are yours?

Tasty Tuesday-Pinterest Recipes

I love Pinterest! I could spend hours just pinning away! One of the things I love to pin most is recipes. I have been making an effort to make at least one-to-two new recipes from my recipe board once a week. My family has been having fun trying and rating some new recipes. I have two new ones for you today. Keep on reading to see if they are a yay or nay.
Here is the original pin for recipe 1 http://jujugoodnews.com/taco-pasta-bake/
*I made the recipes a little bigger so we would have leftovers for lunch the next day.
Please see original pin for smaller portion size, this would make about 8 hearty portions* I used 1 1/4 lb lean ground beef,
1 1/2 pounds Rigatoni pasta (box and a half), 1 medium onion; diced small, 1 1/2 packages taco seasoning
(yes, I cheat sometimes), 1 -8 oz package of cream cheese, and  2 1/2-3 C of shredded  cheese, your favorite.
Pre-heat your oven to 350 and get your pasta cooking (according to package directions).

Heat large skillet over med-high heat and throw in a little oil, we used olive oil.
While skillet is getting hot, dice your onion.

Fry up your onion and beef together. When cooked through, add your taco seasoning and 1 1/2 C of water.
Turn heat down to medium and cook about 5 minutes to let the sauce reduce and thicken.
Add the cream cheese and stir often until cheese is melted.

Drain pasta and add beef mixture and 1 1/2 C of shredded cheese to your pasta pot and
mix well to combine.

I sprayed my 9X11 Pyrex with some non stick spray. Add pasta mixture and top with
remaining cheese. See that little un-cheesed corner? Jacob has decided he only likes cheese
on pizza-go figure!

Bake 25-30 minutes or until cheese is bubbly. So what's the verdict?......

five enthusiastic thumbs up! What will I do different next time? I would
make a little extra sauce. It is a little dry on day two so I heated the leftovers
up in a pan with a little water, taco seasoning, and cream cheese.

I think we have all seen the next pin-The Polar Express Hot Chocolate (AKA The best hot chocolate you've ever tasted). Who in their right mind wouldn't want to make this;)? Even though we were getting ready to watch the Grinch and not Polar Express I figured it was still OK to make.  Here is the original link http://honeyandfitz.blogspot.com/2011/12/polar-express-hot-chocolate-recipe-aka.html#axzz2DU7d9DyI
What you will need. 1 1/2 C heavy cream, 1 (14oz) can sweetened
Condensed milk, 2 C (standard size bag) of bittersweet chocolate chips,
6 C of milk, and 1 tsp of vanilla extract.
Combine all ingredients in a large pot over low heat and stir regularly
for 30-40 minutes or until all the chocolate is melted and incorporated with the
                                                 other ingredients.
I served ours with fun Christmas shaped marshmallows and left over
                                                  Cool-Whip. The verdict is......

Eh, from my two little ones, they like my regular homemade hot chocolate better.
Alison (17) thought is was really good. Hubby and I enjoyed it but it is so rich.
What would I do different? I would add another Cup of milk to the mixture just to
cut the sweetness a bit. We had quite a bit leftover and I put it in the refrigerator
and it held up well for 3 days. My hubba hubba hubby had some the next day cold
he added a little extra milk to his glass and said it was way better as
                                                  chocolate milk!

I would love to feature your recipes! Please email me at frabv2357@q.com with the recipe you would like to share
and I will be sure to feature it here!

Thrifty Thursday-Fun Christmas Websites

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving! I left for my parents this morning in my sweater and flip flops-let's just say it was a cold ride home. Only in Minnesota can we go from 60 to snowing in less than 24 hours, no wonder we are hearty people;) I pray you are all making happy memories with the ones you love today.  When the leftovers are put away the official start to the Christmas season will begin! I have a few fun websites I thought you might enjoy. *Many of these sites have to do with Santa* I do understand that our MOPS moms have many different traditions and some of those do not include Santa. Please enjoy the websites as it fits with your family. We, in our family have found a way to interpret the jolly old elf into our homes while keeping the real reason for the season front and center. I hope you enjoy!

This a great blog all about having a Christ centered Christmas. Offers recipes, stories, and crafts for all ages.

This first one is everything from games, countdowns, recipes, and a link for Norad tracks Santa.

This next one allows your child to get a free personalized video message from Santa. My kids love this one!

Here is a website that tells you about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. My kiddos love this site and picking different countries to read about.

Last but not least, here is a fun website offering fun easy crafts for all ages.

I pray that this special season brings you peace, joy, and precious family memories as we celebrate our Saviors birth!

Women in the Word-Our Greatest Blessing

On the eve of the day we gather with family and friends to give thanks, I want to take you back to 1985 (and hush to those not yet born;) to the Thanksgiving speech given by our then president, Ronald Reagan. How much our world has changed in 27 short years, yet how true and relevant his words are still today.
http://youtu.be/6ejDVsfUQj4

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His love endures FOREVER-(Psalm 107:1).

I am thankful for each of you and the wonderful gifts that each of you brings to this wonderful ministry! May we all give our due reverence to Lord for His eternal unshakable kingdom-(Hebrews 12:28) today! May God's Blessing be on each of you!

Tasty Tuesday-Thanksgiving Leftovers

I think the best part about Thanksgiving is the leftovers. There's just Something about a late night turkey sandwich slathered with Miracle Whip and warmed stuffin' muffins with gravy in front of the TV. After a few days though, you are ready for a little change. If you are looking for some new ideas for all those leftovers, here is a great site that offers great rated recipes. http://allrecipes.com/Recipes/Holidays-and-Events/Thanksgiving/Thanksgiving-Leftovers/Main.aspx

Mentor Moms' Monday

Giving Thanks

The election is over and the yard signs have disappeared.  Promises made: promises broken. Some people are happy with the results--others are not.  Are you concerned about the future of our country  with all of the natural disasters and a culture spiraling out of control?  Are you wondering what the future will be like for your children and grandchildren?

We can choose to worry about this and let our concerns rob us of our daily joy and hope, or we can trust the Lord who holds the future in his hands.  God gives us comfort in the Bible by reassuring us that the leaders in power are under His authority.  They are accountable to Him.  Psalm 22:28 says, "For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations."

God is sovereign and is in control of the rise and the fall of every world leader.  Nothing happens by accident; God will do what He chooses to do.  In Proverbs 21:1 we read, "The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases."

So as we approach this season of Thanksgiving, let us give thanks to God remembering that He is in control and He makes no mistakes.

Women in the Word-Loving Every Age

http://ylcf.org/2012/09/loving-every-age/  I found this post awhile ago and held onto it for this day. As many of you know, I LOVE my birthday! It is a great time to reflect on the year past to see where I was, where I am, and where I am going. It is true, our culture reveres youth and anything over 30 as a has been. I disagree! I think we need to celebrate every year and thank God for the privilege of age and wisdom! Aging is inevitable. No matter how much you dwell on it, wish it away, or daydream of your younger years they are not coming back. So celebrate, be proud of your age, and wear it to the glory of God! Also, you never know when it will be your last, so make it memorable not only for you but for those who love you!

I am so grateful that 35 years ago today I was born! I am grateful for all the experiences, all the tears, all the laughter, for all the things that built endurance and character, and mostly for God's faithfulness through it all!  Today I celebrate and today I am so blessed that you made it a day I will treasure always!

Thrifty Thursday-Leftover Candy

If your kiddos went trick or treating last night, you might be swimming in candy like we are today. My kiddos always get some candy that isn't their favorite like lemon heads, laffy taffy, and various other hard candy. While we are checking the candy over, we separate that candy into a separate pile.  That is the candy we use for our Operation Christmas Child boxes (you can't send chocolate). It keeps it from sitting around and eventually finding its way into the trash.  Knowing it is going to make other children happy, my kids don't mind handing it over, plus it's another way to get your kiddos involved serving. What are some of your favorite tips, tricks, and ideas to save money?
